Guest Post // God Never Changes

I’m so excited to share with you all this guest post today! Analisa has such a gift of writing, and I loved this article she wrote about the immutability of God. Such a good reminder and such a good truth. Thanks again, Analisa, for reaching out to us. We love having guest-ers on JY!

& & & &

Tiny particles of reddish pink granules roll between my fingers, slightly sticky, the remnants of some scrumptious watermelon. In the distance I see glorious sun rays peek through a puffy grayness to spread their light through the constant hovering of humidity. Above me comes the sound of the forest – insistent croaking of a frog, background chirps of crickets, and somewhere the loci are singing the song of their people. The grass, somehow managing to stay green despite the July heat, prickles my leg as I lay in the grass, leaving my skin itchy. A breeze passes by, and with it I catch the familiar whiff of Avon’s Skin-So-Soft from my shoulders, the secret miracle worker to fend off mosquitoes. In fact, it is this scent that spurs me backwards into past summers filled with similar, wonderful memories….

Fighting countless thorns under southern heat to have my fill of wild blackberries, climbing trees barefoot, spontaneous trips to the playground, eagerly expecting suckers when my mom drove in the bank’s drive-thru, coming home sweaty from soccer practice with my dad, reading a book with a popsicle on the driveway as I dry out from a swim, taking exhilarating golf cart rides with my grandpa….

All of these are days have met their demise as time has progressed, revealing changing aspects of life and reminding me of the precious value of immutability. Now, these days have been replaced by preparing for college, cycling, walking in the cool of the evening with my mom (well, as cool as summer allows anyway!), learning to cook vegetarian meals, and going out for Sonic’s Happy Hour slushies with my sister. So, are they bad changes? Not entirely. However, change of any sort can be mentally rattling and difficult to process. Hence, the immutability of summer is all the more sacred to me. Summertime doldrums. This is the gift I have received annually for over a decade, yet never bore of unwrapping.

Further than summertime doldrums, however, immutability also reveals itself a characteristic of God, one that I far too often forget. Yet this is such an important truth!

My. Father. Never. Changes.

Cue Hebrews 13:8, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Can this be said of any human on Earth? Absolutely not!

When my friendships change, God is immutable.

When I have failed, God is immutable.

When my bank account is empty, God is immutable.

When I’m hit with illness, God is immutable.

When I’m in foreign territory, God is immutable.

When I’m struggling in school, God is immutable.

David exemplifies the beauty of affixing his eyes on God’s stability during a time of affliction in Psalm 102:25-27, “In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.”

He remains. Wherever you are – relishing summer doldrums as I am, struggling with the unknown future as everyone is, drowning in affliction as David was, or just trying to make it one day to the next – take heart today in knowing you have an immutable God. You will change. People will change. God will not.

Just for fun, what are your summer doldrum memories? And if you would care to share, when have you found comfort in God’s immutability?

Great post! And so true! Many changes happen throughout our lives… but it’s SO wonderful and comforting to know that God will NEVER EVER change — no matter what the circumstances are!! Ahh, that’s so good to think about. 🙂 Thank you so much for writing this post, Analisa and reminding me of that today. ❤
